Playdough

The weather around here lately has been pretty crummy. We have a couple of nice days, and then it rains all day or worse we even had some snow the other night! Looking for something to do with the kids on those stay inside days? Make your own playdough! Not only is it a lot cheaper then buying those little containers in the stores but if you kids eat any of it (and you know they will all try it at least once!), you know what's in it :) This is my mom's recipe. The exact same playdough I played with as a kid, and the same recipe she has made 100's of times for the playschool she used to have :)

Ingredients
1 Cup Flour
1/2 Cup Salt
2 Tsp. Cream of Tartar
2 Tbsp. Oil
1 Cup Water
Food Colouring (If you want to make red, using food colouring paste is best, otherwise it will be pink!)

Mix dry ingredients in a medium to large pot, then add oil. Colour the water and then add to the mixture. Mix together. Cook over medium heat 3 minutes until lumpy. It will pull away from the sides and form a ball.
Store in plastic covered containers.

  1. This recipe is awesome! We use it all the time too!! I actually use my cake decorating food dyes to make them now. We get super vibrant colours that way.
I half the recipe and make smaller batches and then we get more colours!!
    Super fun!! :)

  2. I know! I actually get vibrant red :) My moms class would always ask for red and only get pink. I dont use liquid colour for anything anymore!

  3. I made some this morning and coloured it yellow, great for a rainy day! I thought I added too much water, but the heat thickened it up into a nice dough. Thanks for sharing!

  4. Yay I'm glad it turned out for you! It's pretty amazing to watch it go from a soupy mess to usable playdough :)
